Summary of Spring 2006 Activities
During the second semester of 2005-06, Math Club met approximately 15 times, competed in the AMC and AIME, hosted one and competed in one additional regular season Great Plains Math League Contest, and competed in the state GPML contest and the tri-state regional GPML contest.
Club members agreed that all the contests they participated in this year have been worthwhile learning experiences and should be continued. They decided to impose $10 dues in order to pay for the MathLeague.com contests and the additional AMC-12 opportunity next year. Dues will be waived for students who receive free or reduced lunch. The costs for many of the GPML contests were covered this year by a donation from a parent who is a local business member. Club members worked in concessions at three baseball games this spring in an attempt to help cover those costs for next year, in case donation money is not forthcoming.
Highlights:
Great Plains Math League
- Two Leavenworth High School students made state-qualifying scores at the Great Plains Math League tournament at Pembroke Hill High School on Saturday, February 11. This brought to four the number of students going to state, as two others had qualified during first semester. One member tied for first place overall in the Target Round.
- Math Club hosted a Great Plains Math League tournament on March 4, 2006. Four LHS students won medals in individual events. One 3-person LHS relay team placed in the top three and one 6-person LHS team tied for first place in the Team Round. LHS placed second overall. One additional student made a state-qualifying score.
- The state tournament was held April 22 at JCCC. LHS took second place. The club president, HoYong Choi led the point scoring for LHS with a second place finish among seniors in the Sprint round and a tie for first in the Target Round. Choi, Steven Davis, and Ian Tracy won second place in the Relay Round, and all five students working together placed third in the Team Round and fourth in the Power Question. The entire team also qualified to participate in the Regional GPML contest in May.
Other Contests
- Six LHS students qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Exam based on their score on the AMC-12 A (the first available test date). This contest was sponsored by the math department. Four of these students were regularly attending Math Club meetings. Math Club sponsored a second opportunity to qualify by administering the AMC-12 B a few weeks later. Four additional Math Club members qualified for the AIME based on their scores on that test, for a total of 10 qualifiers this year. For comparison, four students have qualified for the AIME in the past 5 years combined. Based on results posted by the Kansas director of the AMC, it appears that only one school in the state had more students qualify this year.
- Math Club members participated in MathLeague.com contests monthly through April. This contest involved 30-minute, 6-question tests. High scorers within the building were recognized in the Pioneer Pulse daily announcements.
