Goodfellows

Purpose

Goodfellows provides Christmases for Leavenworth families that may not otherwise have them and helps Leavenworth students (especially LHS students) in times of crisis or great need.

General Information

Goodfellows is the oldest student organization or club at LHS, founded for the sole purpose of bringing "Christmas cheer to those who might otherwise lack that cheer." Its origin at LHS has been traced back to 1908. It could be older, but its vision and commitment are the same: to provide Christmas to Leavenworth community families who will not have a Christmas because of extraordinary circumstances. Last year Goodfellows, through the generosity of the students and staff, provided a complete Christmas to 41 people, most of whom were young children. Additionally, we provided back-to-school back packs (new back pack, school supplies, and new school clothes) last August to 125 elementary children. We also helped LHS students throughout the year with clothes, food, gasoline to get to medical appointments, and other necessities. Goodfellows cares, and the students and staff of LHS are why Goodfellows can do what it does.

Goodfellows is made up of freshmen through senior volunters who want to help make a difference in someone else's life. It begins in early fall, hits the peak of its activities in December, but continues to provide help throughout the school year.

2005-06 Activities

Goodfellows Penny Week: Monday (Nov. 13), Wednesday (Nov. 15), and Friday (Nov. 27)

It is time for Goodfellows’ Annual Penny Week (the week of November 13) to raise money to provide Christmases (complete with presents and food) to families currently in shelter with the Alliance Against Family Violence. Last year LHS through Goodfellows provided a complete Christmas to 21 families, all of which had young children from 3 months to 11 years old. Without the efforts of LHS seminars and Goodfellows, these families would not have had Christmas.

In addition to Christmas activities, Goodfellows anonymously helps students and families throughout the year with clothes, athletic shoes, trips to doctors, disaster relief (students have had their house burn down or flooded), and whatever else is needed. We also provide needy elementary students with new backpacks with school supplies and one new back-to-school outfit each.

As part of raising the money through Penny Week, Seminars collect money each day of the Penny Week as Seminar Competition. The winning seminar gets a complete Pizza Party, second place an Ice Cream Party, and third place bags of candy. But, the real winner is the children who would not have had Christmas without your generosity.

Bags will be delivered to Seminars each seminar day of Penny Week and collected at the end of seminar. Winners will be announced the following week.

Please support this incredible Pioneer Tradition of Giving.
