History and Progress

Lady Pioneer Track and Field (along with women’s basketball and volleyball) is the oldest existing sport at Leavenworth High School.

The Lady Pioneer Track and Field team competes in the largest division in the state of Kansas and has a long history of success. 6A state level competition has resulted in top 10 finishes (out of 32 6A schools) in 21 out of 33 years. Those 21 years included two 4th place finishes, two 3rd place finishes, two 2nd place finishes, and nine State Championships! Coach Tamra Strano’s Varsity teams have been Champions or Runner-ups in the largest 6A league, the Sunflower League, for 20 of 25 years, and in Regional competition 21 of 33 years of her coaching career.

During State and Kansas Relays Championship competitions Lady Pioneer Track and Field heralds 86 individual/relay champions and five Honorable Mention All-Americans. In 2004 Lady Pioneer Track and Field was awarded, in the prestigious Kansas Relays, Most Outstanding Team in the high school girl’s division, competing against teams from Arkansas, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas. In that same year and again in 2005, Lady Pioneer Track and Field was awarded the Kansas Cup for the most points scored amongst all Kansas schools.

Numerous athletes have gone on to compete at the collegiate level. Some schools where Lady Pioneer alumnae compete on a national level are: Southern Illinois University; Arizona State University; Furman University; Marquette University; University of Arkansas; North Texas State University; Kansas University; Emporia State University; Rockhurst University; Barton County Community College, a junior college track and field powerhouse; Drake University; Wichita State University; and Fort Hays State University; just to name a few!!
