Leavenworth High School Cheerleading

Purpose

The purpose of cheerleading is to promote school-wide spirit and sportsmanship through positive representation of Leavenworth High School.

General Information

Cheerleaders perform at all varsity football and basketball games, as well as home varsity soccer games, volleyball and wrestling matches. Pioneer cheerleaders also participate in and help plan LHS pep assemblies. Representatives are also active in community events, including assemblies at elementary schools.

Cheerleaders must try out in order to be selected for either the varsity or junior varsity squads. Tryouts are held in the spring of the preceding school year for varsity positions in order to ensure that members are able to attend summer practices and cheerleading camp. The varsity squad will consist of a maximum of sixteen girls. Candidates must meet an overall score of 85% of the points possible in order to make the varsity squad. Positions will be left open for incoming students. Fall tryouts are held the first full week of school in August.

Tumbling is not a requirement for participation in the Pioneer cheerleading program.

Junior varsity positions are also left open for incoming freshmen and transfer students. Tryouts for these positions are held in August, immediately after the new school year begins. Tryouts are judged by the cheerleading coaches. Overall ratings of cheerleading candidates are based on teacher evaluation, clinic participation, eligibility, and the actual tryout performance. Cheerleaders are expected to attend all practices and performances, as well as to participate in extra events as assigned. Members of the cheerleading squad must comply with KSHSAA rules and regulations with regard to conduct and grades.

Kansas is a non-competition state, so participation in cheerleading competitions is expressly prohibited. Participation in cheerleading festivals is allowed by state rules. Participants in cheer festivals receive ratings, but are not ranked as "first," "second," "third," etc. Members of the cheerleading program follow National Federation of State High School Associations rules with regard to stunting. However, tosses of any kind (including basket tosses) are prohibited by state rules.
